The Music City Loop is The Boring Company's underground transit system in Nashville, Tennessee, and it is under construction. It follows the design of the company's Las Vegas Loop: riders board a Tesla at one station and ride nonstop to the station they chose.
What is the Music City Loop?
The system is a pair of one-way tunnels running side by side, almost 25 miles long, linking Nashville International Airport (BNA) with downtown, Music City Center, Lower Broadway, and West End Avenue. Teslas will carry riders at up to 70 mph, with trained drivers at first, and The Boring Company says a trip from BNA to Lower Broadway will take about 10 minutes. More than 40 stations are in design.
Why the Music City Loop Exists
The Boring Company was founded to move traffic underground, and Las Vegas was the first city where a Loop carried paying passengers. The State of Tennessee and the company announced the Nashville project in July 2025, and the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) permit allows 25 miles of tunnel inside state highway land, so the route follows roads the state already controls.
How it Works
The digging is done by Prufrock-MB machines, a hard-rock version of the company's Prufrock tunnel boring machine built for Nashville's limestone. Company tests put the rock's compressive strength, the pressure needed to crush it, at about 14,000 pounds per square inch. The team has made more than 300 upgrades to Prufrock-MB1 since it started digging and builds each one into the machines that follow.
The Economics of the Music City Loop
The Boring Company says the Music City Loop is 100% privately funded, with no taxpayer money for construction or operation, and expects the total cost to be a few hundred million dollars. Fares have not been announced.
Current Status of the Music City Loop
TDOT executed the tunnel permit on February 25, 2026, and by the company's April 1 update Prufrock-MB1 was tunneling from Lot 16, beside the Tennessee State Capitol. Prufrock-MB2 followed from the same site in the summer, and the company's October 1, 2026 update reported both machines digging at the same time, Prufrock-MB3 set to launch in late October, and Prufrock-MB4 being built. The team is pushing to have four machines underground by the end of 2026.
What Comes Next
Drive Tesla Canada reported in September 2025 that the first section is expected to open in early 2027. The Boring Company's next project update is due on December 1, 2026.
The Bottom Line
The Music City Loop is The Boring Company's first passenger system to be built outside Las Vegas. Its planned route of almost 25 miles is longer than all the tunnel the company has dug in Las Vegas, which it puts at more than 10 miles, and the company is paying for all of it.
