Tesla has published four official Master Plans on Tesla.com, and its mission has changed with them: Part Deux spoke of accelerating the advent of sustainable energy, Part IV of sustainable abundance, and in December 2025 Elon changed the wording to amazing abundance, so Tesla's stated mission is now “to build a world of amazing abundance.”

The Secret Tesla Motors Master Plan (just between you and me)
Elon Musk, 2 Aug 2006
Official page: https://www.tesla.com/secret-master-plan
In short
- Build sports car
- Use that money to build an affordable car
- Use that money to build an even more affordable car
- While doing above, also provide zero emission electric power generation options
The first Master Plan is a four-step ladder. Tesla would sell a sports car, the original Roadster, and use that money to fund a more affordable car, then a still cheaper one after that. Elon wrote that buying a Roadster helps pay for the low-cost family car, with the second model “roughly half” the Roadster’s $89,000 price. Zero-emission electric power generation is already on the 2006 list, so it was part of the plan from the start.
Master Plan, Part Deux
Elon Musk, 20 Jul 2016
Official page: https://www.tesla.com/master-plan-part-deux
In short
- Create stunning solar roofs with seamlessly integrated battery storage
- Expand the electric vehicle product line to address all major segments
- Develop a self-driving capability that is 10X safer than manual via massive fleet learning
- Enable your car to make money for you when you aren't using it
Part Deux is how Tesla grows from a sports-car company into cars, roofs, autonomy, and a shared fleet. Tesla would combine with SolarCity and put solar roofs over integrated battery storage, then fill every major vehicle segment, from Model 3, a compact sport utility vehicle, and a pickup to the Semi and high-passenger-density urban transport. Autopilot was to become a self-driving system 10 times safer than a human driver, trained on the fleet. A car you are not using could earn money in a shared fleet, the idea behind today's Robotaxi Network, and the plan's high-passenger-density urban transport is closest to the Robovan Tesla showed in 2024.
Master Plan Part 3
The Tesla Team, 5 Apr 2023
Official page: https://www.tesla.com/master-plan-part-3
“Today, we are publishing Master Plan Part 3, which outlines a proposed path to reach a sustainable global energy economy through end-use electrification and sustainable electricity generation and storage. This paper outlines the assumptions, sources and calculations behind that proposal.”
Tesla published a paper that lays out that path, pairing end-use electrification with sustainable electricity generation and storage, with the assumptions, sources, and calculations in the PDF. The plan calls for 240 terawatt-hours of storage, 30 terawatts of renewable generation, and $10 trillion of manufacturing investment.

Master Plan Part IV
The Tesla Team, 1 Sep 2025
Official page: https://www.tesla.com/master-plan-part-4
Part IV sets a north star of unconstrained sustainability without compromise. Tesla describes bringing artificial intelligence (AI) into the physical world by unifying hardware and software, with labor, mobility, and energy as the building blocks at scale. Optimus is framed as a way to give people back time. The mission line on that page is “We're accelerating the world's transition to sustainable abundance.”
Guiding principles
- Growth is infinite.
- Innovation removes constraints.
- Technology solves tangible problems.
- Autonomy must benefit all of humanity.
- Greater access drives greater growth.
