What is MACROHARD?

MACROHARD is a software company that Elon Musk wants to run almost entirely with artificial intelligence, with no human org chart, just swarms of self-driving agents that code, design, test, and ship. Elon revealed it on X on August 22, 2025. By March 2026 it had picked up a second name, Digital Optimus, when Elon described it as a joint project of xAI and Tesla, the software-world twin of Tesla's humanoid robot.

The Idea

The name flips Microsoft on its head, and the joke carries the whole idea. Because a pure-software firm makes no physical hardware, Elon argues, an AI should be able to stand in for the entire company. In practice that means Grok-powered agents doing the jobs a software firm's employees would do, from writing code to shipping new features. As of early October 2026 it is in development, and Elon describes a system that "in principle, is capable of emulating the function of entire companies."

Why MACROHARD Exists

The reasoning is about cost before it is about software. Elon describes MACROHARD as two minds working together: Grok as System 2, the slow, careful thinker that decides what to do, and a Tesla-built agent as System 1, the fast, instinctive doer that watches your screen and moves the mouse. The design matches the cheap piece to the work that happens most often. The instinctive layer runs on Tesla's AI4 chip, which Elon puts at roughly $650, while the pricey thinking hardware, SpaceXSI's NVIDIA stack, is saved for the moments that need deep thought.

That chip carries the cost argument. If most of the clicks can run on cheap, off-the-shelf silicon and only the hard reasoning calls on the expensive hardware, the cost of each task keeps falling, and MACROHARD aims that math at the desk work that fills most software offices.

How it Works

Picture a worker's desk, except the worker is really two AI models. Grok is the navigator, holding a picture of the world in mind and deciding the plan. The Tesla agent takes in the last five seconds or so of live screen video along with your keyboard and mouse moves, then carries out the next step. Grok does the thinking, and Digital Optimus does the typing.

MACROHARD's Grok side runs on the Colossus supercomputers in Memphis. Colossus 1 and Colossus 2 together held about 780,000 NVIDIA GPUs by September 2026, and SpaceX reported 1.7 gigawatts of AI computing power at the end of September. Each agent is cheap to run on its own, while the machines they all draw on cost tens of billions of dollars.

The Economics of MACROHARD

The business case is simple math ahead of launch: the number of agents, times the computing cost per task, times how many people use it, set against the steady revenue a software company would otherwise pay human salaries to earn. If the two-brain cost idea holds up, the profit story follows. On February 2, 2026, SpaceX bought xAI in an all-stock deal that valued xAI at about $250 billion and SpaceX near $1 trillion, which brought xAI's half of MACROHARD inside SpaceX. Tesla's half comes from its $2 billion investment in xAI, which Elon tied to MACROHARD in March 2026. Elon has compared the model to Apple, a company that designs everything in house and hands the manufacturing to others.

Current Status of MACROHARD

As of early October 2026, the Digital Optimus agent was in development, with its public release, pricing, and first customers still ahead. In August 2026 SpaceXSI shipped Grok Bot, an agent product whose bots sign in to work tools, and Elon Musk said on August 12 that Digital Optimus is different: "real-time video human emulation." The newest Grok model, the planning half of the design, is Grok 4.7, released on September 21, 2026.

The physical footprint is easier to see. In September 2025 Elon said xAI was painting MACROHARD on the roof of the Colossus 2 building in Memphis, big enough to read from space, and in January 2026 xAI named its new data center in Southaven, Mississippi, MACROHARDRR.

What Comes Next

The next steps are a public release of the Digital Optimus agent, a published score for how often it finishes tasks, and some sign of what an AI-run software firm costs to run compared with a human one. TERAFAB, the chip factory Tesla and SpaceX announced in March 2026, is meant to supply the AI chips that work on this scale will need.
