What is MACROHARD?
The name flips Microsoft on its head, and the joke carries the whole idea. Because a pure-software firm makes no physical hardware, Elon argues, an AI should be able to stand in for the entire company. In practice that means Grok-powered agents doing the jobs a software firm's employees would do, from writing code to shipping new features. As of the middle of 2026 it is a goal rather than a finished product, and Elon describes a system that "in principle, is capable of emulating the function of entire companies."
Why MACROHARD Exists
The reasoning is about cost before it is about software. Elon describes MACROHARD as two minds working together: Grok as System 2, the slow, careful thinker that decides what to do, and a Tesla-built agent as System 1, the fast, instinctive doer that watches your screen and moves the mouse. The clever part is matching the cheap piece to the work that happens most often. The instinctive layer runs on Tesla's AI4 chip, which Elon puts at roughly $650, while the pricey thinking hardware, xAI's Nvidia stack, is saved for the moments that truly need deep thought.
That $650 chip is the whole idea in a nutshell. If most of the clicks can run on cheap, off-the-shelf silicon and only the hard reasoning has to call on the expensive hardware, then the cost of each task keeps falling. That is MACROHARD's bet, aimed straight at the desk work that fills most software offices.
How it Works
Picture a worker's desk, except the worker is really two AI models. Grok is the navigator, holding a picture of the world in mind and deciding the plan. The Tesla agent takes in the last five seconds or so of live screen video along with your keyboard and mouse moves, then carries out the next step. Grok does the thinking, and Digital Optimus does the typing.
A goal this big needs an enormous engine room. MACROHARD lives on Colossus, xAI's Memphis supercomputer. Colossus 1 is about 220,000+ GPUs and ~300 MW of grid power; Colossus 1 and Colossus 2 together provide about 1.0 gigawatt of compute (SEC). A 555,000-GPU / 2 GW line is a campus tally, not a Colossus 1 or Colossus 2-only figure. Each agent is cheap to run on its own, but the machine they all run on is anything but cheap.
The Economics of MACROHARD
The business case is simple math even though there is no product yet: the number of agents, times the computing cost per task, times how many people use it, set against the steady revenue a software company would otherwise pay human salaries to earn. If the two-brain cost idea holds up, the profit story follows. The company around it already matches the ambition. On February 2, 2026, SpaceX bought xAI in an all-stock deal that valued xAI at about $250 billion and SpaceX near $1 trillion, folding MACROHARD into a single parent that spans both aerospace and AI. Elon has compared the model to Apple, a company that designs everything itself and hands the manufacturing to others.
Current Status of MACROHARD
For all the buzz, MACROHARD has not shipped anything yet. As of the middle of 2026 there is no public release of the agent, no price, no customer count, and no agent count. What does exist is concrete, and I mean that literally. xAI has filed permits in Memphis for the project's physical footprint, and the gap between the two buildings shows just how big the bet is.
A roughly $15 million, 43,000-square-foot "MACROHARD Office Build-Out" sits next to a far larger building permitted nearby. The spending is real even though the product is not, which is the unusual shape of this whole venture, with money and computing power committed well ahead of a single shipped feature. The model underneath it, Grok 4.20, came out of beta and became something users can pick around March 18, 2026.
What Comes Next
The path forward runs through proof, not headlines. The agent feature, which goes by MACROHARD, Digital Optimus, or the Grok Computer depending on the day, is still being prepared, so the next steps are a public release, a clear score for how often it finishes tasks, and some sign of what an AI-run software firm costs to run compared with a human one. None of those numbers are out yet, and they are what will tell us whether the idea holds up in the real world.
The Bottom Line
MACROHARD is Elon's bet that a software company is really just software, so an AI should be able to stand in for the whole thing, with cheap chips doing the busywork and Grok doing the thinking. Until the agent ships and someone measures it, it stays a heavily funded idea: a real building, a real supercomputer, and a product that does not exist yet. Then again, betting that Elon cannot pull off the thing everyone says is impossible has a long track record of going badly.
